王晙是沧州景城(今河北沧县)人,自幼聪慧,弱冠之年便通过明经擢第,成年后“气貌雄壮,时人谓之有熊虎之状”。他豪放旷达,“有古人之风”。他是唐中宗和唐玄宗开元前期的名臣、名将和宰相。王晙的仕宦生涯从清宛县尉起步,历经殿中侍御史、渭南县令、加朝散大夫、桂州都督、朔方军副大总管、安北大都护、吏部尚书、兵部尚书、同中书门下三品(宰相)等多个职务,为开创开元之治做出了突出贡献,深得朝野敬仰。
