《后汉书·西域传》云:“(大秦)王欲通使于汉,而安息欲以汉缯采与之交市,故遮阂不得自达。至桓帝延熹九年,大秦王安敦遣使自日南徼外献象牙、犀角、瑇瑁,始乃一通焉。”学者们一般都据此认为公元166年是中国和罗马直接交通的开始,这批取海道来华的罗马人是第一批来华贸易的西方人。①其实,在这以前,早就有一支罗马境内的商队到过中国,他们来华经商的时间比范晔在这里所提供的年代还要早数十年。 据《后汉纪·和帝纪》记载:永元十二年, “东(误冬),西域蒙奇兜勒二国内属”。
