For more than 11 years, more than half of the world’s direct reduction and hot pellet iron production has come from Midrex equipment. In 1989, the production of direct reduced iron from Midland equipment accounted for 61% of the total direct reduced iron production in the world. The total output of sponge iron in the world was 16 million tons in 1989 and 2.44 million tons in Venezuela, making it the country with the highest output of sponge iron in the world. In 1989, the production of direct reduced iron from Midland Equipment was 9,770,000 tons, an increase of about 7% over 1988. In 1989, the direct reduction process using gas as the reductant reached 14.6 million tons. The output of equipment using coal as a reducing agent was 1.4 million tons, an increase of 36% over 1988.
