Pagesterone is a new antiasthma drug, racemic piperonone dimer, obtained by structural modification to overcome the bitter taste of pepperone (I). Its chemical structure is difficult to separate due to the differences in reaction conditions and configurational isomers. There have been reports of II-VIII formulas; the basic condensation of the pepperone product is mostly seen as a double pepperone (VI). The authors used sodium/benzene condensation to obtain needle crystals (orthosterone) at mp166-168°C.
