For the German dairy industry, 2000 is a golden year. The turnover of 127 dairy processing companies across the country reached the 20 billion euro mark for the first time, and total sales increased by 4% compared to 1999. Supporting more markets German dairy processors pay an average of 30 euros/100 kilograms of raw milk for dairy farmers. This payment is lower than the Netherlands and Denmark and 20% below Italy. In 2000 and early 2001, most of the German Raw milk exports flow to Italy. The sales volume of drinking milk increased by 1% over 1999, which means that the per capita consumption increased by 568 ml to 65 litres a year, which is the highest in German history.
