人类在消费过程中,常常会将偶然的奢侈品变成恒久的必需品,梭罗用“第二天性”来概括人类的这种心理倾向,同时尖锐地指出,人类的“第二天性”是对自然天性的背离,虽然从某种程度上催生了人类文明,但人类的“第二天性”始终与人类的虚假需求和异化消费是一种共生关系,催生出来的文明也是一种虚假文明,是反生态的文明,人类的“第二天性”是一切生态危机的根源所在。他主张建构一种以遏制“第二天性”为导向的生态文明,从而为人类摆脱生态危机找到了良策。
