As a lesbian, Scottish Negro, there was a period of adoption by whites, the cultural displacement experienced by the Scottish poet and novelist Jay Kaye, and the racial, gender and political discrimination they encountered that gave her a sense of alienation of Scotland . Her poetry expresses her defense of the legal status of Scotland and her marginalized confusion. Her first novel, The Trumpet, was published in 1998 and explores the issue of attribution of home, culture and gender, emphasizes the mobility of subject identity, reveals the complexity of kinship, culture and ethnic traditions, Imagination and memory to shape personal history, and ultimately establish a spiritual home.
