Greece is located in the eastern Mediterranean, the southern tip of the Balkans, with a population of 7,865,000 (1953), an area of 132,728 square kilometers (including much of the Kanis Islands), the topography Mountainous, coastline long and winding. Its strategic position as a mere reference to the Black Sea to the north and to the south to the Red Sea has always been reserved for the imperialists in the United States and Britain and is vainly attempting to use it as a military base in the Balkans. During the Second World War, although Hitler troops occupied most of Greece’s territory, they could not destroy the will of the Greek people. Under the leadership of the National Liberation Front, the Greek people formed the People’s Liberation Army, which carried out a heroic struggle against the Germans for four years and liberated vast areas. In December 1944, when the Soviet Red Army liberated much of the Balkan Peninsula, the Greek People’s Liberation Army coordinated its operations and liberated its own territory. After the liberation of Greece, a coalition government including the National Liberation Front was set up but the National Front was pushed out because of British armed intervention. September 1946, King George II restoration.
