Bell Atlantic and Nynex of the United States announced on June 30 that they will merge the cellular communications companies of the two companies. The business scope will be from Maine to Virginia. This is the first time that two regional BELL companies have formed such a large-scale alliance since the Bell company was separated from AT&T 10 years ago. The move aims to establish a nationwide wireless communications company. After the merger of the two companies’ wireless services, it will create a cellular phone company that is second only to MCCAW cellular communications company in terms of service provision, and will cover an area of 55 million people. The new company’s capital is US$1.2 billion.
