专用英语(ESP)是现代英语在特定语域中运用而产生的功能变体,特定的环境对语言的使用提出了特殊的要求,这种社会交际的需求是“专用英语”产生和发展的外部动因;语言学和应用语言学对于语言本质和语言教学本质研究的不断深入,特别是社会语言学和话语分析理论的发展,使得语言研究由静态的结构特征描述向动态的运用过程及相关因素转移,这作为内部动因推动着专用英语教学的实践活动成为英语教学领域的主流。ESP教学的终极目标是发展学习者在特定语域的交际能力,交际性原则应体现在ESP教学活动的各个环节上。
