晋西黄土丘陵半干旱地区土地瘠薄,气候干旱,自然降水利用率不高,加之单一种植,广种薄收,使农业生产长期低而不稳。1984—1985年,在对该地区旱作农业生产技术综合开发研究中,经过系列化配套试验、示范,总结出了以培肥改土、蓄水耕作、选用抗旱良种、合理密植、“五早”管理等一套旱作农业增产技术,取得了粮食翻番,经济收盖近10倍增长的效果。
