Objective To investigate the role of IL-17, IL-10 and TGF-β in the pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis C and to observe the effect of anti-virus treatment with pegylated interferon alfa on these cytokines. Methods The levels of IL-17, IL-10 and TGF-β in 20 chronic hepatitis C patients before and after treatment with pegylated interferon alfa were measured by ELISA. Results The levels of IL-17 and IL-10 in patients with chronic hepatitis C were significantly higher than those in normal controls (P <0.001). There was no significant difference in TGF-β between the two groups. After antiviral therapy, the levels of serum IL-17 and IL-10 in patients with chronic hepatitis C were significantly lower than those before treatment (P <0.001). Conclusion IL-17 and IL-10 are involved in the pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis C. This conclusion is of guiding significance in predicting the anti-viral efficacy.
