据B.zobel等人报告,由于木材资源的短缺,世界上所供应的木材质量在逐渐发生着变化;趋向于采伐小径木,利用幼令和低质木材。为此,迫切要求人们更广泛地利用木材废料、非规格材,寻求新的木材加工技术,提高木材利用率以及努力改善森林经营措施,提高木材的品质。改良木材的品质有许多方法,其中加强森林经营和林木育种措施是行之有效的。木材的许多重要性质,譬如木材的容积重(比重、密度),可通过遗传控制而得以改变;试验研究表明,选择适宜的亲本能使幼令期的松木木材的容积重约增加2磅/立方呎。
