The steady growth in world steel production throughout the 1980s came to an end in 1990. The economic recession in many industrialized countries has forced steelmakers to cut production. The severity of the recession varies from country to country and has only recently begun to affect Japan. A few countries in Southeast Asia actually increased their steel output and put into production new capacity in 1991. The prospect of steel demand in 1992 is generally not optimistic, the interests of steel manufacturers suffered losses. Demand for iron ore is also affected by unfavorable factors as it is closely linked to steel production.
