章太炎是近代著名的国学大师，是文化保守主义的代表人物。他的儒学思想在五四新文化运动时期继续发展并出现了新的变化，由原来的独尊经学转向调和汉宋。由扬佛抑儒转向重视儒学、由宣扬西学转向回归儒家文化本位。尽管他在五四新文化运动时期的儒学思想并非是对五四新文化运动的直接反映，与五四新文化运动的关系并不密切，但作为文化保守主义者的同时，他还曾一度以革命家现身，他辛亥革命时期的儒学思想在政治思想、学术思想乃至哲学思想方面对五四新文化思潮产生了较大的影响。
