This article roughly traces how the idea of integrating various telecommunications services into one network evolved within CCITT. A brief review of the existing telecommunications network was followed by an overview of CCITT activities from 1968 to 1980. By 1968, it was clear that digital technology would not only be limited to transmission but would also break into the areas of exchange, signaling and terminals. The CCITT recognizes this trend and has established a special study group to commission it to study all issues related to the PCM and to coordinate the ongoing work of other study groups in the digital arena. By 1980, the first ISDN proposal (G.705) was agreed. Introduced in more detail the activities during the initial period of ISDN between 1980 and 1984. Describes the structure of the series of recommendations related exclusively to ISDN issues.
