A pyroelectric detector is a heat detector that responds to changes in polarization caused by the absorption of radiation. In equilibrium, the polarization is compensated by free carriers. When the incident radiation fluctuates rapidly (shorter than the free carrier redistribution time), temperature changes cause polarization changes. This change in polarization induces charges deposited on the surface electrode (typically nichrome wire). The detector is essentially a capacitor that shows voltage on both ends due to radiation. These detectors lose their polarization if they are raised above the Curie point. The detector will not be damaged if it is raised above the Curie temperature of the detector
