意大利杨树生产实践表明:通过遗传改良的途径,选育速生、抗病及符合木材工业生产要求的栽培品种(无性系),是保障杨树栽培获得成功必不可少的条件.在意大利杨柳研究中,遗传改良处于首位,栽培、防治病虫害、木材利用及林业经济等方面的研究都结合新品种选育来进行,研究成果十分突出,已选育出著名的1214、1262、I455、I45/51、I63/51、I72/51、I72/58、I37/61、ICB_2、IBL等欧美杨和美洲黑杨优良无性系,其中以I214推广数量最多,约占50%,由于I214易感褐斑病,随后又选育出抗褐斑病的LuisaAvanzo、Cima、Bellini等无性系.近期选育的Eridano、PE24—62、35/66、PE4—68、114/69、06/70、70/76、74/76、81/74、77/74、MC、Bellotto等无性系生长显著超过I214,接近或略高于L.Avanzo,如06/704年生每公顷树干胸高断面积为17.1平方米,
