The US water heater producer A.O. Smith is going to increase its investment in China with a goal of benefitting from the country.
The 137-year-old US water heater manufacturer A.O. Smith declared the plan of investing 500 million yuan (USD 76.05 million) to build a low-carbon water heater research and development center in Nanjing.
It is known that the center, once completed, will double A.O. Smith’s production capacity in China and further consolidate its leading place in the water heater industry.

  A.O. Smith’s history in China

With its great strength, A.O. Smith keeps growing at a fast pace in China since it entered the country. Now it is one of the best water heater brands in China.
In 1998, A.O. Smith invested 30 million US dollars to establish A.O. Smith (China) Water Heater Co., Ltd in Nanjing, Jiangsu.
In 2001, several hours after China joined the World Trade Organization, A.O. Smith declared another investment amounting to 20 million US dollars. With that money, A.O. Smith (China) Water Heater Co., Ltd became the largest water heater manufacturing and development center in Asia.
In 2004, A.O. Smith established its first global research and development center in Nanjing, which provides support for the product development, technology application, and engineer progress in China and all over the world.
Ding Wei, Vice President of A.O. Smith, said that the new project of low-carbon water heater development and production base stands for A.O. Smith’s confidence in greater achievement in China, as well as its development trend in the future.

  Doubling its production

At this moment A.O. Smith has built a complete set of modern systems integrating research, development, production, sale and service in China. It provides water heaters for both residential and commercial users.
It is acknowledged that A.O Smith will never stop improving the energy-saving technology. Special tools are used to make the water heater work more efficiently with less consumption of gas and electricity. In addition, it combines the electric water heater with the solar water heater, enabling the users to save money in the sunny weather.
“Our research and development center is located in China. This is one of our best advantages. Our staff is close to the Chinese market and thus is more familiar with it. We can develop products meeting the demand of Chinese consumers to win their hearts,” said Ding Wei.
The new research and development centre in Nanjing, once completed, will cover 250 thousand square meters, twice of the size of the exiting factory. The latest environment-friendly and energy-saving production line will be installed in the new centre. The annual production capacity will be 3 million units, which is twice the current capacity.

  Bullish on Chinese market

More than 100 specialists in water heaters are working in the exiting plant of A.O. Smith in Nanjing. In the past five years, the total investment in research and development amounted for 400 million yuan (USD 60.84 million). When the new center is completed, the amount of specialists will be increased to 150.
As one of the best water heater brands in China, A.O. Smith recognizes the importance of China. According to Ding Wei, A.O. Smith has already worked out an ambitious plan to double its sales in China in the next five years. Apart from the aforementioned project, A.O. Smith also plans to provide various kinds of water heaters, ranging from high-end products for companies to low-end products for households.
