Je t’aime, Wuzhen
By Chen Yaping
What makes Wuzhen stand out in China’s water town landscape goes far beyond its mesmerising river and bridge vista. It is the ancient town’s cultural charisma fostered by such literary giants as Mao Dun and Mu Xin, together with its outreach in modernity through the power of Internet that brought the town into the limelight of the global stage. Becoming the permanent host of the World Internet Conference in 2014, Wuzhen is reloaded with new dreams and missions embraced by its people, who always know where they are rooted.
The dancer returns home
Before coming back to take the relay baton of the family business, Xu Jie spent 12 years in Singapore as a professional ballet dancer and educator. He had never thought about quitting his established career in Singapore until the day his parents called from the hometown. “They wanted me to go back to take care of the family business, and it was a hard decision to make,” Xu Jie recalled.
“When I was in Singapore, I was doing what I am good at and all I needed to do is to hone my skills; back home I had to start as a beginner. For about 3-4 years I felt so overwhelmed that I started to regret,” Xu confessed.
Back in Wuzhen, Xu Jie started with the sales and marketing team, using his language skills to tap marketing opportunities outside China. “I am still learning, but I am getting used to my new role. Self-confidence is coming back to me,” shared Xu Jie, who now is the steering wheel of ‘San Zhen Zhai’, a time-honored deli brand with a history dating back more than 160 years during the Daoguang years of the Qing Dynasty.
Wang Shijie’s nostalgia
Director of the Tongxiang Celebrities and Local Culture Research Society and a Wuzhen native, Wang Shijie spent his childhood and teenage years in Wuzhen. In his eye, Wuzhen is a vibrant, dynamic, and culturally rich settlement that forever triggers love and excitement in him. He has been actively involved in promoting the cultural brilliance of the water town to an international audience, taking part in the production of various TV programs including The Nostalgia by CCTV and a special feature of the 3rd World Internet Conference. “The town’s cultural riches are inexhaustible,” Wang Shijie announces, feeling proud to be a witness of the town’s modern developments.
Wang Shijie is also a key editorial member of a book that is ready to make its debut during the 4th World Internet Conference scheduled to open in November of this year. In the book, Wang Shijie shares his love for his hometown in the back-cover texts.
Bamboo weaver
Before the world was taken over by plastic products, Chenzhuang, a small satellite village in Wuzhen, was a famous bamboo basket manufacturing and distributing center in China. In the old times, many people in the village were skillful craftsmen making a living by crafting beautiful articles from bamboo strips. Naturally, however, making bamboo baskets had to play second fiddle to the serious business of putting bread on the table.
Qian Lihuai, the son of one of the inheritors of the craft, is the man behind the comeback of this unique cultural treasure. Thanks to his desire to breathe new life into the time-honored profession that could well fade to grey in a generation or two.
Majoring in Industrial Design at college, Qian Lihuai returned to his hometown to learn the craft from local masters. A bamboo bag was sold at more than 600 yuan on his online shop launched in 2011, bringing him more passion and confidence in restoring the tradition.
The young master’s dream is to bring the craftsmanship into schools. His studio called Bamboo Garden has been working closely with a dozen academic institutions. “I want to share the beauty of the craft with the younger generations,” a high-spirited Qian Lihuai says.
