The article gives a list of earthquakes whose magnitudes were over 5.0 and a summary of the principal data and characteristics of seismic disasters in the mainland of China in the year 2000 in accordance with assessment reports on earthquakes by provincial seismological bureaus concerned. A comparison of the data and characteristics for the periods 1990～2000 and 1980～1989 is also presented.
