护坡叠石和挡土点缀在江南古典园林中,我们常常能看到在堆土的土山山坡边叠置有大量的山石,或散置山石,这些山石既可阻挡和分散地表径流,防止因雨水冲刷而造成水土的流失,具有挡土墙的性质,同时又是处理山体层次和曲折变化的艺术手法,有时还常常和园路相结合,以引导游人观赏山体景色(图1、2)。有的则因受到园林用地面积的局限,而又要堆叠起较高的土山,这时则常用山石来作为土山山体的山脚,以缩小土山所占的底盘面积,而又可堆叠起具有相当高度和体量的假山(图3)。护坡叠石的处理,一般应注意外观上的曲折多变、起伏有序、凹凸多致,有交叉退引、有断有续,讲究层次变化,并能与山脉相结合,以体现山体的自然过渡和延续。在土山的造型处理上,护坡叠石还常与山体上的园路、蹬道和一些点缀的亭台建筑物相呼应,以体现层次变化,错落有致。而挡土点缀多适于土石相间的假山配景或树木盘根
