Objective To investigate the changes of the electrophysiological characteristics of wide dynamic range (WDR) neurons in spinal dorsal horn after lumbar spinal nerve ligation (SNL) in rats. Methods Healthy male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into normal group and SNL group. WDR neurons in spinal dorsal horn were recorded by extracellular electrophysiological method. Results Compared with normal rats, the excitability of WDR neurons was increased in SNL group, showing the increase of receptive field, the increase of spontaneous neurons, the decrease of threshold of C-induced discharge, the shortening of incubation period, . In addition, the number of induced discharges in A and C fibers of WDR neurons in SNL group was lower than that in normal rats. Conclusion The excitability of WDR neurons is mainly caused by lumbar 5 spinal nerve ligation in rats. Increased excitability of WDR neurons may be involved in the development of neuropathic pain.
