苏联对光波导的实验研究始于1974年,比西方国家晚了几年。1975年,苏联研制出第一个光纤样品,其损耗值低于10dB/km,到1983年,损耗值已接近于理论上的最小值。除了开展自聚焦光纤的研究以外,苏联还对多包层光纤波导进行了一些理论研究工作,并第一次研制了准模W形二信道少模环形光波导。另外还开展了椭圆形波导的理论研究,这种光纤可以保持单偏振工作。
Soviet experimental studies of optical waveguides began in 1974, a few years later than in western countries. In 1975, the Soviet Union developed the first optical fiber sample with a loss value of less than 10 dB / km. By 1983, the loss value was close to the theoretical minimum. In addition to the research on self-focusing optical fibers, the Soviet Union also conducted some theoretical studies on the multi-clad optical fiber waveguides. For the first time, the quasi-mode W-shaped two-channel less-mode annular optical waveguide was developed. Also conducted a theoretical study of elliptical waveguide, this fiber can maintain a single polarization work.
