在儒家经典中,婚姻问题被视为家庭、社会的大事。《礼记·昏(婚)义》说:“夫礼,始于冠,本于昏,重于祭丧,尊于朝聘,和于乡射。此礼之大体也”;“昏礼者,礼之本也。”在儒家的“礼”书中还记载了婚礼的繁复的仪节、对婚姻双方(特别是对女方)在道德和家庭义务上的规定。
