变压器的材料与铁芯形状对AV功放的音质也有一定的影响。传统的EI型变压器铁芯由硅钢片交叠而成,磁路间隙较大,漏磁较多,效果很低,且易引入干扰,一般只用在中低档AV功放。环形变压器(环牛)铁芯用含低铁的冷轧硅钢带卷绕而成,在磁路中没有气隙,漏磁也是微乎其微且有噪声小(仅为EI型的1/10)、效率高(相同功率时仅为EI型的1/2)、内阻小、反应速度快等优点而广泛应用在较高档AV功放中。
