For some companies in Japan, Germany has always been a world center for optical technology activities. During the 1980s, the continuous development of German core photonics technologies such as optoelectronics, plastic fiber optics and laser devices attracted more Japanese investors. Recently, Japan has included the following items in its growing list of photonic investment projects in Germany: ① Mitsubishi Electric Corporation to build a $ 400 million semiconductor plant in Aachen. ② Japan’s Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and Nissei Opto, which includes a joint venture with Robotron Elektrik GmbH (a manufacturer of optical transmission systems in Germany), will invest 0.53 billion U.S. dollars. ③ A joint distribution agreement between Germany-based Omroa Eiectronics GmbH, a Japanese company, and Carl Zeiss Jena, a former East German fiber giant, with the ultimate plan of co-manufacturing equipment.
