雷默认为音乐教育应该定义为审美教育,这也被越来越多的教育工作者所肯定,它的首要目标就是,开发每一个人对音乐的艺术力量与生俱有的反应能力。同时,他又讲到,哲学都有一定的局限性,音乐教育哲学同样也是,在一个时代令人信服,在另一个时代就有可能被否定。作者正是基于这一点,提出了关于音乐教育的哲学观点。首先它列出了列奥纳德·梅尔关于美学的三个理论,即思辨主义、绝对形式主义和绝对表现主义,然后对它们进行系统的研究,找出最适合音乐教育发展的依据。
