The preliminary results of a national research project on hypertension in the country show that about 1/3 of the residents in urban areas suffer from hypertension. Mohsin Ibrahim, a professor of cardiology at Cairo University who is in charge of this research project, said that Egypt is one of the countries with the highest prevalence of hypertension in the world unless it adopts active measures to control hypertension. Egypt will face a serious epidemic of cardiovascular disease in the next 20 years.
