西南航空护林总站的航护范围,是我国的主要林区之一,森林主要分布在四川省的甘孜、阿坝、凉山三州,云南省的金沙江、把边江、南盘江流城,贵州省的黔西南、黔南州以及广西的百色、河池等地区。这些林区森林蓄积量约有20多亿立方米,森林又多分布在大河、大江中上游和边疆、少数民族聚居区,且大都属于贫困山区,地形复杂、山高坡陡、交通不便,通讯设施较差,因此开展航空护林,对保护森林资源生态环境、繁荣山区民族经济、实现森林防火现代化都具有重要意义。航空护林作为森林防火现代化的一项措施,已取得了明显的效果。在东北、西南两个林区,航空护林是不可缺少的手段。由于我国当前飞机数量少,在客观上就决定了森林防火是以地面为主,但只要地空协调一致,密切配合,航空护林能发挥优势作用。
