Since the reform and opening up, especially under the encouragement of Deng Xiaoping’s important speech on the southern tour, Hubei township and town enterprises have sprung up and flourished. It is estimated that the total output value of township enterprises in 1993 could reach 90.89 billion yuan, an increase of 68.5% over 1992, of which the industrial output value was 55.98 billion yuan, an increase of 66.3% over 1992, and the profit and tax was 6.705 billion yuan, an increase of 73%. The total output of township enterprises accounted for the entire province. 44% of the total industrial and agricultural output value, township industrial output value accounted for 35% of the province’s industrial output value. The unconventional development of township and village enterprises has become an important pillar of the province’s economic development and a major event. Although the development of township enterprises in Hubei has achieved unprecedented results, they are facing great opportunities for development and also face challenges.
