罗汉是梵语Arhat的音译简称,意译有三种含义:一杀贼,意思是杀尽一切烦恼之贼:二应供,意思是接受人天供养;三不生,不再受轮回之苦。罗汉本为佛教小乘追求的终极目标,但是在释迦牟尼佛的规劝和鼓励下,罗汉们纷纷回小向大,“住世不涅”,帮助维护大乘佛教,于是在大乘佛教里也有了他们新的地位和作为。罗汉的形象都是出家比丘相,头部无须发,身着袈裟,全身无任何装饰,或坐或立,栩栩如生,是藏传佛教各类造像中最为朴实
