The authors tested the blood T lymphocyte subsets and NK cell activity in 117 NPC patients and compared them with 40 healthy controls. The results showed that the levels of T lymphocyte subsets and NK cells in patients with NPC were lower than those in the control group (P <0.01). The NK cell activity in poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma and undifferentiated squamous cell carcinoma was significantly lower than that in moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma and the control group (P <0.05 and P <0.01). UICC-TNM stage Ⅳ and recurrence NK cell activity was significantly lower than those of Ⅱ and Ⅲ (P <0.05). Blood NK cell activity and serum levels of Epstein-Barr virus VCA-IgA negative correlation rs- = 0.85, P <0.05). The results show that the number of peripheral blood T lymphocyte subsets and subpopulation imbalances with NK cell activity are inhibited in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma, the latter with the progression of the disease decreased. The authors believe that the detection of blood NK cell activity and T cell subsets may be used as an adjunct to assess the prognosis of NPC.
