In an initial section of the Brutus(§§ 40 and 50),Cicero points out that some illustrious Greek heroes like Menelaus,Ulysses and Nestor were celebrated by Homer as the most skilled speakers. Moreover,me classical tradition, beginning with Plato, enshrined the primacy of oratory of these heroes and considered them masters in rhetoric. Each of them became the personification of three different styles of discourse or was compared with the finest Attic orators(Menelaus with Lysias,Nestor with Isocrates and Demosthenes with Odysseus).Cicero focuses on the examples of these famous heroic orators to illustrate his own ideal model of communication and to draw the attention of me Brutus’ recipients to the different types of discourse to which corresponds the eloquence of each of the three heroes. In reference to Menelaus,in particular,Cicero intentionally alludes to the Iliad in order to evoke and strengthen the rhetorical reception of the past,i.e.to link the discourse of the hero wim the plain style. In my paper I want to examine in detail the passages of the Iliad and the passages of the Brutus to highlight the oratorical peculiarities of Menelaus both in Homer and Cicero.
