Frequency-follow-up response is a steady-state auditory brainstem steady-state response induced by periodic stimuli that occurs at multiple locations in the auditory brainstem and reflects the effects of auditory brainstem neurons on the periodic components of the stimulus Phase activities. The typical frequency-dependent response induced by pure or complex tones has a spectral peak at both the fundamental frequency and its multiple frequency, and its energy is concentrated near the fundamental frequency. Distorted products are also induced in the dual-frequency complex tone-induced response. Frequency-following responses may contain information related to pitch perception and therefore become a research tool for speech or pitch coding and plasticity of the auditory brain stem level. This article reviews the generation of frequency-following responses, signal characteristics and their reflection of speech and pitch coding of auditory brainstem.
