Objective To study the changes of telomere length of peripheral blood lymphocytes in patients with autoimmune thyroid disease (ATD). Methods Flow cytometry was used to detect telomere length of peripheral blood lymphocytes in 38 ATD patients and 48 healthy controls. Results The telomere length of peripheral blood lymphocytes in patients was significantly shorter than that in healthy controls (P <0.01). The length of telomere was not related to the course of disease, onset time and thyroid hormone levels. The telomere length of healthy control group became shorter with the increase of age, and the telomere length was not related with age. Conclusion The telomere length of peripheral blood lymphocytes in ATD patients is shorter than that in normal people and is not related to age, suggesting that peripheral blood lymphocytes may replicate, divide and apoptosis may be abnormal.
