Objective To understand the effects of HIV / AIDS-based HIV / AIDS education activities carried out by project schools on the basis of life skills and the current AIDS-related knowledge, attitudes and skills among senior secondary school students in order to better promote AIDS prevention in schools. Methods A closed questionnaire was used to survey 2 280 people from 18 high schools in 8 provinces in the random stratified cluster from June to July in 2008. Results The awareness rate of eight key indicators in the survey of awareness of basic HIV / AIDS among school high school students was 78.8%, significantly higher than that of non-project school students 61.0%. High school students in project schools did not discriminate against AIDS patients The ownership rate was 83.5%, significantly higher than 67.7% of non-project school students. According to the current status of the project schools, 60% of the total score of knowledge, attitude and skills is used as the standard to measure the students ’pass or fail. The average passing rate of high school students’ skills in the project schools is low, only 68.4%. Conclusion The participatory HIV / AIDS prevention activities based on life skills have obvious effects, but the skills development is not enough, suggesting that the future project work should be targeted to improve students’ life skills.
