1887年至1893年兴筑的台湾铁路是华侨投资兴建的第一条铁路,也是中国自行筹款兴筑的第一条铁路。该路长约九十九点八公里。1887年7月先筑台北至基隆段,1891年11月竣工,长约三十二点二公里。翌年兴筑台北至台南段,于1893年12月到达新竹而停建,长约六十七点六公里。路宽十一、二尺,轨阔三尺六寸。火车头八辆,重十五吨、二二十吨不等,名为“腾云”、“御风”、“超尘”、“挚电”等,以言其快速。客车20辆,货车26辆。起初每日开车六次,后减为四次。途中遇车,亦随时可以搭乘。
