Yangpu, the first foreign-funded development zone in China and the experimental field for China’s reform and opening up, has become a state-level development zone with the size of a modern port industrial city from a barren hillside full of cacti, with the growth of the Republic. Yangpu: more rocks, more cacti, more wasteland Before 1992, Yangpu was a poor and backward area full of stones and cactuses. Most of the 30,000 inhabitants were fisheries and agricultural population. The annual rainfall of 1200 mm, the average annual evaporation of 1800 mm, rainfall less than evaporation, poor soil. In 1989, per capita income of farmers only 200 yuan. Over the years, Yangpu, with its natural harbor and abundant resources, still has difficulty in development and its residents have a hard life. In March 1992, the State Council officially approved Yangpu as a national-level development zone for the introduction of foreign-made films. Overnight, Yangpu suddenly became a frontier position of China’s reform and opening up by an unknown land of loneliness.
