Objective: To investigate the effect of oral smecta in preventing gastrointestinal reaction caused by intravenous infusion of azithromycin. Methods: From August 2011 to July 2012, 126 patients with respiratory tract infection were randomly divided into control group and treatment group of 63 cases. The control group was treated with azithromycin infusion. On the basis of the control group, the treatment group was given oral smecta 30 minutes before the infusion of azithromycin. The incidence of gastrointestinal reactions in both groups was observed. Results: Adverse reaction rate in the treatment group was 34.92%, which was significantly lower than that in the control group (58.75%). There was significant difference between the two groups (χ2 = 7.17, P <0.01). Conclusion: Oral administration of Smectite before intravenous infusion of azithromycin can effectively reduce the adverse reaction rate of patients and improve the quality of life of patients, which is worth popularizing in clinic.
