半个世纪以前,伦敦书店的柜台上出现了一本新书:《中国农民生活》(即《江村经济》,英国Routlege出版公司1939年第一版——译注)。不论普通读者,还是专家学者,都对该书作者的姓名感到十分陌生。实际上,他是一位年轻的中国民族学家,在最有名的英国人类学家马凌诺斯基指导下度过两年的留学生涯后,刚刚通过了博士论文的答辩。这位导师在为自己学生的著作所写的长篇序言中有如下评价:“我敢预言,费孝通博士所著《中国农民生活》一书将被认为是人类学的田野调查及理论发展的里程碑。该书有许多突出的成就,其中每一项都标志着一个新的发展。……我怀着由衷的赞佩的心情,有时未尝不带有嫉妒的成分,阅读了费博士清晰的与令人信服的议论及其生动的与资料丰富的叙述”。马凌诺斯基当然不会料到,他对费孝通科研成果的这一崇高评价,20年后竟然变成说明年高望重的中国民族学家所
Half a century ago, a new book appeared on the counter of the London bookstore: “The Life of Chinese Peasants” (ie “The Village Economy”, The First Edition, 1939, Routlege Publishing, United Kingdom). Both ordinary readers and experts and scholars are very unfamiliar with the author’s name.
