【Abstract】Public sign works as an important communication bridge between China and the world. Yet， the translation of public sign has not been seriously considered. The paper will discuss the public sign translation under the guidance of functionalist translation theory. The paper collects bilingual public sign translation data with field method.

1. Background of the study
The increased national strength and international landscape of China have led to frequent communication between China and the world. There are more and more foreign visitors come to China.
2. Significance of the study
The study intends to employ translation principle， and conducts some public sign translation methods in the view of functionalist translation theory， which will make public sign translation more acceptable for foreigners.

Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English （2003） defines sign as “a board or other notice giving information， warning， direction， etc.” Oxford advanced learner’s Dictionary （1989：176） defines sign as “a piece of paper， wood or mental that has writing or a picture on it that gives information， instruction， a warning， etc.”
