Marx believes that productivity can be divided into material productivity and spiritual productivity, and affirmed the role of science and technology in promoting the development of the productive forces. However, in the view of Western Marxism, the relationship between science and technology and productivity is very complicated. Most western Marxists hold a pessimistic attitude toward science and technology. The study of western Marxism more highlights the productivity of knowledge, culture and ecology. The consistency of the two lies in affirming the expansion of the connotation of productive forces, and the difference is reflected in the aspects and attitudes of concern. This trend of research on the concept of productive forces has revealed that we should realize that the development of the productive forces presents a phased focus and at the same time, we must also have full confidence in Marx’s productivity theory.
