Chinese novelist Ying Chen’s novel “Memory of the Water” is written in China. However, a detailed analysis of the text reveals that the novel is not an emphasis on the ethnic characteristics of the author. Instead, it shows through the historical narration of China Value rheology, ethical narration to deconstruct the traditional ethical structure, finally denied the Chinese cultural essentialism. Comparing the images of missionaries in different novels, we find that the creation of Jérôme, a posterity of the missionary, is even more problematic than any rigid ethnic and cultural identity. Therefore, while “memory of water” is written in China, its purpose is to intervene in the concept of static duality, to get rid of ethnic symbols and boundaries and to expand new forms for overseas writers in writing China.
