翦伯赞的《红楼梦》研究是以1954年对胡适思想的第二次批判和这一时期关于资本主义萌芽问题的讨论为学术背景的,他运用唯物史观分析《红楼梦》的主题思想,由考察18世纪上半期中国社会经济的性质入手,着重强调小说中反映的资本主义萌芽下新的市民阶层的要求。他与他所批判的胡适的红学研究都是借助于历史学的观念和方法,但是不同于胡适的“考证”红学对小说主题做出的只是一部家史的概括,他认为《红楼梦》是18世纪上半期中国历史的缩影;虽与李希凡、邓拓等为红学界同归入持“市民说”学者之列,然而不同于后者以《红楼梦》中的阶级批判性以及市民思想的体现为中心的有的放矢似的论述,翦伯赞把“阶级斗争”纳入到对社会形态的整体考察之中,相比较而言他在《红楼梦》研究中对于唯物史观的运用更为成熟。
