The British flower wholesaler introduced a group of carnation from Colombia. Unpacking found that many of the flowers were covered with mycelium, which appeared to resemble a large cobweb, and the study demonstrated that the new disease was caused by a fungus that immediately led flower and plant pathologists attention.
