1950年10月19日,我跟随彭德怀司令员,开赴朝鲜战场。志愿军总部最初设在朝鲜北部山区的大榆洞,居住条件十分简陋。大榆洞有一个废弃的金矿,矿洞口不远处,一栋两间的简易房,是彭德怀的办公室,彭总在那儿吃住和办公。离此不远处是一栋三间的房子。中间的大房间是大通铺,十五六个参谋住;两头各隔开一个十几平方米的小房间:东头是作战处的处长丁甘如和副处长杨迪住;西头是我和毛岸英住。我住这个房间本来是不够条件的,但由于毛岸英是俄语翻译,我是朝语翻译,两个人住一起,工作起来方便一点。就这样,我升格了。
