Hong Kong’s high-density urban environment, with its unique geographical features, world-famous seaports and intensive development, has created many distinctively shaped neighborhoods that provide local conveniences such as centralized activities, mixed land use and efficient public transport. Together, these factors have shaped Hong Kong’s distinctive city image and set an example for other cities around the world. Over the past few decades, the scale of land development projects has been increasing, and the types of podium buildings have also emerged. Large, commercially successful development projects often benefit from convenient footbridges and public transport links between plinths, yet these projects often result in a lack of vitality in neighboring neighborhoods.
