Charles Cournot’s opera Faust (S.407) is based on the love story of Faust and Marguerite in Goethe’s first Faust drama. It is generally believed that the drama weakens the philosophy of the original, and presents a more pure love tragedy in lyrical and delicate style. Of course, the opposite of purity and evil in the play, the fall and salvation of the soul, and so on, also have considerable weight. For Faust, it is thought that Cournot has simplified his character.
