Objective To explore the causes of nosocomial infections in elderly patients with cerebrovascular disease and seek effective ways to prevent nosocomial infections and reduce the incidence of nosocomial infections. Methods 503 elderly patients with cerebrovascular diseases admitted to the Chinese People’s Armed Police Forces College Hospital from March 2003 to March 2005 were analyzed by age, sex, duration of hospitalization, antibiotic use and invasive procedures, among which 98 Cases of nosocomial infection (19.48%), and the data obtained by using x ~ 2 test statistics. Results The hospital infection rate of elderly was significantly higher than that of younger (P <0.01). The hospital infection rate was significantly higher in patients with long hospital stay (P <0.05). The invasive operation significantly increased the hospital infection rate (P <0.01). There was no significant difference between gender, prophylactic use of antibiotics and hospital infection rate (P <0.05). Conclusions The incidence of nosocomial infections in elderly patients with cerebrovascular disease is in direct proportion to age, hospitalization time and invasive procedures, and has no clear relationship with gender and prophylactic antibiotics.
